How a rug is made

Four stages, each by hand, in the same order every time.

Spun and dyed

Sheep wool is spun by hand, then dyed in copper pots with madder, indigo and walnut.

Knotted

One knot at a time on a vertical loom. A 2 × 3 metre piece holds more than a million knots.

Washed and dried

Washed in running water and dried flat in the sun to set the colour and soften the pile.
